A birth chart can look like a complicated circle of symbols. But it's built from just four simple ideas: planets, signs, houses and aspects.
1. Planets: the "what"
Each planet represents a part of you:
- Sun: your core self
- Moon: your feelings and needs
- Mercury: how you think and talk
- Venus: how you love and what you value
- Mars: how you act and go after what you want
- Jupiter: where you grow and feel lucky
- Saturn: where you learn patience and build strength
- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto: slower, generational energies of freedom, dreams and transformation
2. Signs: the "how"
Each planet sits in one of the twelve zodiac signs. The sign describes how that planet expresses itself. Mercury in Gemini thinks quickly and playfully; Mercury in Capricorn thinks carefully and strategically.
3. Houses: the "where"
The chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked to an area of life: self, money, communication, home, creativity, work, relationships, transformation, travel, career, friends and the inner world. A planet's house shows where in your life its energy shows up most.
Houses depend on your exact birth time, which is why the time matters so much.
4. Aspects: the "conversations"
Aspects are the angles between planets. They show how different parts of you work together:
- Trines and sextiles: easy, harmonious connections
- Squares and oppositions: creative tension that pushes you to grow
- Conjunctions: two energies blended into one
Where to start
- Begin with your Big Three: Sun, Moon and Rising.
- Then look at your personal planets: Mercury, Venus and Mars.
- Notice which element is strongest: fire, earth, air or water.
- Finally, explore houses and aspects.
