Good to know
What is a retrograde?
A planet is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it seems to slow down, stop and move backwards through the zodiac for a while. It doesn't really change direction. It's an optical effect, like a train you overtake that seems to roll backwards for a moment.
In astrology, a retrograde is a time to look back rather than rush ahead: to review, repair and reconnect with whatever that planet stands for. It's not a bad time. It's a slower, more reflective one.
The shadow
The shadow is the stretch just before and after a retrograde, when the planet travels over the same degrees. Many astrologers feel the theme of the retrograde starting in the pre-shadow and settling in the post-shadow.
What each retrograde is about
Mercury retrograde
Review, re-read and reconnect. Slow down your words and plans.
Three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time.
Venus retrograde
Revisit what you value, in love, money and beauty.
Once every 18 months, for about six weeks.
Mars retrograde
Rethink how you act. Patience before the next push.
Once every two years or so, for about ten weeks.
Jupiter retrograde
Grow inwardly. Review your beliefs and your luck.
Once a year, for about four months.
Saturn retrograde
Review your structures, duties and long-term goals.
Once a year, for about four and a half months.
Uranus retrograde
Find your inner freedom. Change from the inside out.
Once a year, for about five months.
Neptune retrograde
Clear the fog. Look at your dreams honestly.
Once a year, for about five months.
Pluto retrograde
Deep inner change. Let go of what you've outgrown.
Once a year, for about five months.
Questions people ask
Which planets are retrograde right now?
The tracker at the top of this page shows every planet's status for today, calculated from the real positions of the planets and updated every day.
Do planets really move backwards?
No. A retrograde is an optical effect. Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun at different speeds, so from our point of view a planet sometimes seems to slow down and move backwards against the stars for a while.
Is a retrograde bad luck?
Not at all. In astrology a retrograde is a slower, more reflective time. It's good for reviewing, repairing and reconnecting, and less suited to rushing into brand-new beginnings.
What is a retrograde shadow?
The shadow is the stretch just before and after a retrograde, when the planet travels over the same degrees. Many astrologers feel the theme of the retrograde starting in the pre-shadow and settling in the post-shadow.
Why are the dates slightly different on other websites?
Retrograde dates are moments in time, so the calendar date depends on your time zone. We show all dates in your own local time.
